FF. Ferrari Four. That’s four-wheel drive and four seats. Yeah.

Now that you’re conscious again, the Ferrari FF has been designed to break the super car mould. The FF is a Ferrari that you can drive in the snow and gravel and mud. This is somewhat revolutionary because although we’ve had fast cars with four-wheel drive, this is a super car.

You see, owning a super car is like having a high maintenance girlfriend. They’re beautiful to look at but they can be a pain to live with. If it’s a bit damp outside your supercar might have a tantrum. You can feel like you’re on thin ice. Anyone who’s driven a Murcielago will know that the fun can quickly be eroded away by the knowledge that this car wants to take off its high heels, with tear smudged mascara and slam you through the nearest tire wall.

I’m not sure I can continue with this analogy.

So the FF has brought a refreshing change to the super-car market, but is it any good?

Well, in a word, yes. Despite its GT appearance, the FF is one of the most powerful cars Ferrari has ever made. With a 6.3litre V12, the FF will get form 0-62 in just 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 208mph!

So far so super car. How then does this GT powerhouse maintain its composure in the snow?

Unlike a normal four-wheel drive system, the Ferrari FF has two gearboxes: one standard seven speed connected to the rear wheels and a two-speed box that has been attached to the front wheels.

A very clever adaptive clutch makes sure that harmony between the front and rear wheels is maintained, yet both front wheels will adjust individually depending on how much grip is required.  The result is an effective solution to keep the FF facing the right way in tough conditions, even snow, although the driving experience can be…strange, as the front wheels can ‘overspeed’ to pull the car out of a corner.

One thing to remember is that this is a big car, only 40mm shorter than a 612 Scaglietti, so don’t expect this to handle like a 458. Do expect a sizeable boot capacity and reasonable seat size in the back, enough for a slim adult.

To summarise then, this car is exciting by concept alone. It still feels like a Ferrari and that was our primary concern. Is this a supercar you can live with? Possibly, but we suspect its still a diva at heart.
