Today, manufacturers across the UK are opening their doors — inviting the public behind the scenes to see modern manufacturing in action as part of the National Manufacturing Day 2026 open house. We think that’s worth celebrating. And it’s a good moment to talk about what manufacturing actually looks like at Specialised Covers.
45 Years of Making Things
We’ve been manufacturing from West Yorkshire since 1981. Over four decades, the products have evolved, the technology has grown and the sectors we serve have broadened significantly, but the fundamentals haven’t changed. Skilled people. Precise patterns. Quality materials. Products made properly.
From our 32,000 square foot facility, a team of over 50 designers, machinists and pattern cutters produce covers and technical textile products for caravan and leisure, automotive, marine, defence, industrial and garden sectors. Every product is cut and sewn in-house. Nothing is outsourced. When something leaves our production floor, we stand behind it.
What Making Things Here Actually Means
Manufacturing in the UK — and specifically in Yorkshire — isn’t just a selling point. It’s a practical commitment with real consequences for the people who buy from us.
It means shorter lead times than importing from overseas. It means full quality control at every stage of production. It means our design and production teams can respond quickly when a specification needs to change. And it means accountability — if something isn’t right, we can fix it fast.
It also means jobs. Skilled jobs, in a community with a long and proud history of textile manufacturing. The skills our machinists carry — the ability to hand pattern, cut precisely and sew to a consistent standard — take years to develop. They’re not easily replaced once lost. National Manufacturing Day exists in part to help address skills gaps and strengthen the future workforce — and that’s a challenge we feel every day in training and recruiting.
The People Behind the Products
Every cover that leaves our facility is the work of a team. The designer who creates the pattern. The cutter who lays and cuts the fabric — by hand or on our CNC digital cutting machines. The machinist who sews it together. The quality check before it’s packed.
It’s skilled work at every stage. And it’s the kind of work that doesn’t get enough credit as a career path — which is exactly what National Manufacturing Day is designed to change.

The breadth of what leaves our production floor on any given day is something that still surprises people. Tailored caravan towing covers. Custom car covers for concours events. Bespoke protective covers for military equipment. Garden furniture covers. Silk reveal covers for supercar launches. Body protection kits for automotive manufacturers. EV charging infrastructure covers, thermal ice bath toppers. Technical textile solutions for the defence supply chain.
All of it made in Shipley. All of it made by the same team. That breadth is a direct result of the skills and capability built up over 45 years — and it’s exactly what makes British manufacturing worth fighting for.
A Day to Say It Out Loud
We don’t often stop to mark moments like this. There’s always something to make, a deadline to hit, a new brief to start on.
But National Manufacturing Day feels like the right moment to say clearly: we’re proud to be a UK manufacturer. Proud of our team, proud of our facility, and proud of what comes out of it every day.
