Bespoke Unimog Covers for Atkinson Vos

We’re excited to share one of our latest collaborations — a bespoke project with renowned Unimog specialists Atkinson Vos. Known for their expertise in Mercedes Unimogs of all configurations, they approached us with a specific challenge: creating a heavy-duty, tailored canopy cover for the rear framework of their tray-back Unimogs.

A Fresh Partnership

This was our first time working with Atkinson Vos, who reached out after experiencing issues with a previous supplier. From the outset, it was clear this project would require a meticulous, hands-on approach to deliver the quality and performance their vehicles and customers demand.

“From the initial contact we found the whole team at Specialised Covers to be really helpful and enthusiastic about working with us. We’d had a bad experience with a previous supplier with awful customer service. They had supplied covers which weren’t made to the correct dimensions which caused us a lot of problems. Specialised Covers arranged to visit our site and inspect the vehicle and a cover from our previous supplier. They listened to what we wanted and made several suggestions about how the design could be improved. The design team subsequently visited and 3d scanned our vehicle which further bolstered our confidence that the product would be top quality. A sample cover was produced showing several different types of fastening so were able to get properly hands on before making decisions about fastenings etc. Having reviewed this cover the first “production” cover was made incorporating all the changes which we requested. The fit of this cover was excellent. Our first order is for a customer in the USA and we’re looking forward to getting his feedback on the product. We’re sure that he’ll be pleased. We’re really pleased to have made the connection with Specialised Covers and are looking forward to working with them again on some custom projects”

Bespoke Design for a Versatile Vehicle

The canopy frame sits over the cargo tray at the rear of the Unimog, a modular space that can serve military, expedition, utility, or commercial purposes. Atkinson Vos needed a cover that would be tough enough for all these roles, while also looking the part.

To achieve a perfect fit, our 3D design team visited their workshop and used Proliner scanning technology to digitally map the framework with millimetre precision. This data was then used to produce a prototype cover, tailored specifically to Atkinson Vos’ generic rear frame design.

Material Matters

With durability and appearance equally important, we worked closely with our material suppliers to select a waterproof, PVC-lined heavy-duty fabric, available in a range of colours to suit the varied tastes of Atkinson Vos’ customer base.

The final cover design includes:

  • Roll-up sides and rear panel for flexible access

  • Internal securing straps to fix the cover tightly to the framework

  • Elasticated pull cords that keep the canopy taught and secure when mounted

  • Discreet Atkinson Vos branding, giving the product a clean, professional finish

Built to Last — and Improve

The initial prototype underwent refinement following direct feedback from the Atkinson Vos team. We enhanced reinforcement points around the frame contact areas and upgraded clip systems to ensure both durability and ease of use in the field. These improvements not only addressed longevity but also ensured the cover could stand up to regular, rugged use.

The first finished cover — now fitted to an American-owned Unimog — has been met with glowing praise. Atkinson Vos described it as a “far superior fit and quality” compared to previous suppliers.

Looking Ahead

We’re proud to have delivered a solution that aligns with Atkinson Vos’ high standards, and even more excited by the potential for future collaborations — not only with them, but also with other companies requiring tailored canopy solutions for specialist vehicles.

If you’re in need of a rugged, well-fitted canopy cover for your fleet or expedition vehicle, we’d love to talk.
