Why Tailored Covers Are Essential for Classic Cars

Car show season is here, and if you’re prepping a classic for the show field this month, you already know the drill: the polish, the detailing, the last-minute fettling before you roll it out in front of people who’ll notice everything. So it’s worth asking, what’s actually protecting the car in between? For a lot of owners, the answer is a generic, off-the-shelf cover. That’s where the real risk sits. A car built to a standard doesn’t deserve protection that isn’t.

Classic Cars

Why they need more than a generic cover

Generic covers are made to a size range, not to a car. They’re cut with enough spare fabric to stretch over “most” saloons or “most” roadsters, which sounds convenient until you use one. Loose fabric flaps in the wind and rubs against wings, mirrors and trim edges every time the car moves. Over weeks and months, that friction becomes fine scratching in the clearcoat, the kind you won’t spot until you’re stood under show lighting wondering where it came from.

A classic isn’t just older, it’s often irreplaceable. Original paint, factory trim, period-correct badging: none of it can simply be reordered. A cover that doesn’t fit is one more variable working against a car that has already survived decades of them.

How a tailored cover protects paint, interior and resale value

A tailored cover is cut to the exact contours of one specific cars make, model and year, there’s no loose material to rub or lift in the wind. That precision fit does three jobs at once:

  • Paint protection — no abrasion against bodywork, and the right material blocks UV fade and moisture ingress.
  • Interior protection — a snug fit keeps dust, damp and light out of the cabin, especially important on cars with original trim or leather that can’t simply be swapped out.
  • Resale value — judges and serious buyers notice condition down to the finish. A car that’s been properly covered between outings tends to show it.

Whether the car lives in a garage or sits outside between shows changes what “tailored” needs to mean. If it’s kept indoors, an indoor car cover prioritises softness and breathability. If it’s kept outdoors, an outdoor car cover needs to be genuinely weatherproof and secure enough not to shift in a gust.

What to look for in a show-quality cover

For a car headed to a concours field, the details matter:

  • A true pattern for your exact model, is ideal – we don’t have your model don’t worry ! We can create a bespoke pattern for any car via CAD or hand patterning methods.
  • Breathable, soft-lined material that won’t mark or swirl the paint (if stored indoors)
  • Weather-appropriate fabric — see our materials guide for how different fabrics perform indoors versus outdoors
  • Secure fastenings that hold without stressing the fabric or the paint underneath
  • Reinforced stitching, since a show cover needs to survive years of use, not one season

Why Specialised Covers is trusted with the world’s rarest vehicles

We’ve been building covers in Britain since 1981, trusted to protect vehicles across some of the most demanding sectors there are, from motorsport and marine to defence. That’s not a claim we make lightly; it means every cover we cut is built to a standard where “close enough” was never good enough. That same standard applies whether the car under the cover is a concours-level classic or a much-loved daily driver. If a cover is good enough for some of the rarest cars in the world, it’s good enough to protect yours.

Ready for show season

This month alone, the calendar is packed: Pebble Beach on 16 August, the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from 21–23 August, CarFest at Silverstone from 28–30 August, and the Gravity Car Show at the NEC from 29–30 August. Early September brings Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace and the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace, both from the first week of the month.

Your car is going to spend far more time under a cover than on the show field. Make sure what’s protecting it is built for the job, take a look at our full range of tailored car covers and find the right fit before the next show weekend.
