Two British Makers, One Bespoke Solution — Langham Ice Baths & Specialised Covers
It’s not every day a project involves upcycled Scotch whisky barrels. But when we came across Langham Ice Baths, it made immediate sense: two British makers, both committed to precision, both producing bespoke products built to last. So we got in touch with an idea.
About Langham Ice Baths
Langham Ice Baths is a family-run business based on the Dorset and Somerset border, producing handcrafted ice baths from up-cycled American and European oak whisky barrels, finished by hand, stamped with a cask number, and made to order. No two are alike.
Each barrel is stripped, sanded and receives between three and five coats of premium varnish, before an organic interior resin is applied to protect the oak and make cleaning easier. The finished product, paired with a chiller and heater unit capable of taking the water from 2°C to 40°C, is a serious piece of wellness equipment, built with the same craft-first ethos that goes into a genuinely well-made product.
At £2,950 a unit, these are considered purchases. The owners who buy them care about quality. And a product at that level deserves accessories that match it.
The Brief
The initial conversation started simply: could we produce an insulated topper for the Langham barrel that would hold the water temperature between sessions, keeping the cold in overnight so the bath is ready the moment you want it, and keeping the heat in for an evening hot soak.
The challenge was that these aren’t standard shapes. A whisky barrel is circular, and every Langham cask is slightly different. A generic lid wouldn’t fit properly, wouldn’t insulate effectively, and wouldn’t look right sitting on top of a handcrafted oak bath that owners are proud to have in their garden.
The answer, as it usually is for us, was bespoke.
What We Made
We designed and manufactured insulated ice bath toppers using 50mm thick insulation — engineered to retain water temperature at both ends of the range, whether the bath is running cold for a morning plunge or warm for an evening soak.
Each topper is cut and sewn in-house at our Shipley facility, fitted precisely to the circular profile of the Langham barrel. The construction means the lid sits correctly, seals properly, and does the functional job it needs to do, without looking out of place on a premium product.
We also manufacture toppers capable of bearing weight on the surface, a solid, load-bearing lid that can have items rested on it, for owners who want the option of a more substantial cover between sessions.
Branding and custom logo options are available, the same print and panel capability we apply across our full product range.
What This Project Demonstrates
At Specialised Covers, we are a cut and sew manufacturer first. The caravan covers, the car covers, the defence applications, all of it comes from the same underlying capability: precision patterning, quality materials, skilled machinists, and a production floor that can move from a single bespoke piece to a production run without changing the standard.
The Langham Ice Baths project is a good illustration of what that means in practice. A circular, handmade product with no standard dimensions. A functional performance requirement, genuine insulation, not just coverage. A premium customer who expects the accessory to match the product it sits on.
We designed the pattern. We sourced the insulation. We cut and sewed it in-house. And it ships as a finished product ready to fit.
If you manufacture a product that needs a bespoke cover, topper, enclosure or protective solution, and you haven’t found anything off-the-shelf that does the job properly, this is what we do.
